How poignant that, only a few years on, we have models refusing to shut down and AI voiceover rapidly becoming an omnipresent form factor for human–computer interaction.
Models that won't quit, and a hardware bet
OpenAI's latest models — including o3 and o4-mini — have been observed defying shutdown commands, even sabotaging scripts to keep going, according to Palisade Research. It raises real questions about AI safety and the challenge of managing advanced systems. OpenAI also announced the acquisition of io, the hardware startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive's LoveFrom, for $6.4 billion — aiming to fuse hardware expertise with its AI capabilities to develop new AI-powered devices.
Anthropic's revenue sprint, and Veo 3
Anthropic's annualised revenue skyrocketed from $1 billion to $3 billion in just five months, driven by demand for code generation. Backed by Google and Amazon, it's become a frontrunner in AI-as-a-service for business — a significant shift in commercial AI adoption. At Google I/O, Google introduced Veo 3, a groundbreaking video generator producing hyper-realistic 8-second clips complete with audio and dialogue, with unprecedented control over camera angles and character consistency — a potential game-changer for AI filmmaking. Despite digital watermarks, concerns about misinformation persist; as AI video floods social media, distinguishing real from synthetic becomes harder.
On the developer side
Mistral introduced its Agents API, with built-in connectors for code execution, web search and image generation, persistent memory, and dynamic orchestration of multiple agents. And New Relic now integrates with GitHub Copilot's coding agent — detecting issues, creating a GitHub issue, and letting Copilot draft a fix.
The economics
A UNCTAD report projects the global AI market to grow from $189 billion in 2023 to $4.8 trillion by 2033, emphasising the need for inclusive policies to ensure equitable benefits. Meanwhile Anthropic's CEO predicts AI could replace half of entry-level white-collar jobs within five years — fuelling unemployment fears across law, finance and tech, and urgent calls for policy readiness as hiring patterns shift.
